May 24, 2005 Embargo: Immediate Release 28-Week Abortion On Durban North School Girl Begins An Investigation That Leads To Arrest O Durban Doctor And Rose Clinic Staff DFL congratulate the Commercial Branch of Durban SAPS on their operations over the past months which culminated today in a Durban doctor, Dr Vikash Nundlall, a nurse, and two employees appearing in the Durban Magistrates’ Court charged contrary to section 2 of the Abortion Act with an offence which attracts a penalty of up to 10 years imprisonment. The doctor was also charged with an offence contrary to the Medicines Act, following the illegal use of drugs including the drug Misoprostil, otherwise known as Cytotec, which is widely used in South Africa to procure abortions contrary to the manufacturer’s recommendations. DFL understand that the charges laid today did not relate directly to the abortion on the schoolgirl, but to a more recent incident. The Police operation followed information given to DFL in the wake of the publicity surrounding the launch of their civil action on behalf of the Durban North schoolgirl who was the victim of a 28 week abortion at the Durban Rose Clinic run by Dr Nundlall on the 28 February 2004. Since passing the information on to the Police last November, DFL have cooperated closely in the investigation. DFL very much hope that this police operation will be the first of many nation-wide which will expose the true nature of the abortion industry.
