Abortion Statistics South African state hospitals and clinics performed 45449 abortions
last year, according to Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang. In written
reply to a parliamentary question from Kobus Gous (NNP), she said by far the most
abortions were performed in Gauteng, and the least in the Northern Cape.
Public and private hospitals in Gauteng performed 18725 abortions in 2001, and
5920 were performed in the Western Cape. These were followed by KwaZulu-Natal
with 4554, the Northern Province (3758), Free State (3697), Eastern Cape (3089),
the North West (2288), and the Northern Cape (738). A total of 2980 abortions
were performed in Mpumalanga during the first 10 months of 2001.
